Hocking Hills State Park is the headliner, but it's surrounded by a region dense with things to do — canoe liveries, zip lines, a vintage scenic railway, Ohio's oldest state nature preserve, and one of the most dramatic natural bridges in the eastern United States. Here's what's worth your time beyond the state park boundaries.

Natural Attractions Nearby

Rockbridge State Nature Preserve

Ohio's largest natural bridge — more than 100 feet long, arching 50 feet across a ravine — sits within this 202-acre preserve about 20 minutes from Old Man's Cave. The 2.75-mile trail system is moderate difficulty. Note: dogs are completely prohibited at this preserve. The natural bridge itself is one of the most impressive geological formations in the state and remains dramatically less visited than anything in the park.

Moonville Tunnel Rail Trail

A 10-mile flat rail-trail follows the former Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad bed through dense forest. The signature feature is Moonville Tunnel — a brick-lined structure built around 1856, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and famous for ghost legends. The ghost town of Moonville peaked with around 100 residents in the 1870s; the last family left in 1947. The trail is open dawn to 11 PM. It's easy enough for any fitness level and genuinely atmospheric — bring a flashlight for the tunnel.

Clear Creek Metro Park

A 5,470-acre park spanning Hocking and Fairfield Counties containing Ohio's largest state nature preserve (Allen F. Beck, at 4,729 acres). Over 2,200 documented plant and animal species live here, including Ohio's last rhododendron colonies. The Chestnut Ridge Trail through sandstone formations is the standout. Dogs are restricted to one section — check the park map before bringing pets.

Lake Hope State Park

Entirely within the 26,824-acre Zaleski State Forest, Lake Hope surrounds a 120-acre lake with seven hiking trails (17+ miles) and 25+ miles of mountain biking. The Peninsula Trail (3 miles with lake views) is the best hike. The lodge restaurant earns 4.7 stars on Google for hickory-smoked BBQ — worth a dinner reservation if you're in the area.
