Logan, Ohio Visitor Guide: The Practical Base for Hocking Hills

Logan is where a Hocking Hills trip gets practical: groceries, restaurants, visitor information, indoor attractions, fuel and the main highway connection to the park.

Logan is the practical capital of a Hocking Hills trip. The famous gorges are south of town, but Logan is where you refill the car, buy groceries, find a pharmacy, eat a meal, escape bad weather and solve whatever you forgot at home.

Most visitors treat it as the place they drive through on US-33. That undersells it.

Why Logan works as a base

Logan sits at the junction of US-33 and the main SR-664 corridor into Hocking Hills. The Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center is at 13178 State Route 664 South, immediately useful for maps, current trail information and lodging questions.

Downtown Logan is worth an hour

The official tourism bureau now actively promotes historic downtown Logan as more than a supply stop. The compact center includes local shops, food, arts and several indoor attractions.

The Bowen House hosts art and cultural programming. The Hocking Hills Children's Museum gives families an indoor option. Hocking Hills Escape Games adds a group activity that does not depend on trail conditions.

Use Logan for the big supply run

Walmart, Kroger and Save A Lot all operate in Logan. That makes town the right place to buy several days of cabin food before heading into the rural rental corridors.

Logan vs. staying deep in the hills

Staying in or near Logan is convenient if restaurants, shopping and quick highway access matter. Staying south of town is better if you want woods, seclusion and the shortest morning drive to the trails.

There is no universal winner. For a first visit, the compromise many travelers like is a cabin south of Logan but still close enough that one planned town run covers groceries and dinner.

When Logan is most useful

  • Arrival afternoon before cabin check-in
  • Rainy days
  • Sunday supply emergencies
  • Before driving into low-service areas
  • Families needing indoor activities
  • Travelers wanting restaurants instead of cabin cooking every night

Do this before leaving town

Fill the gas tank. Download offline directions. Screenshot the rental check-in instructions. Buy food. Check the park weather and current trail status. Once you turn south into the hills, small mistakes become much less convenient to fix.
